Idea 97: Creating Shareware and Freeware Software - PAD Files


PAD files are computer-readable files that describe your shareware or freeware software.

PAD files can save a lot of time when submitting to Shareware and Freeware Directories as a lot of them will be able to read your PAD file without you being required to repeatedly enter lots of information about your software.

Additionally, some Shareware and Freeware Directories allow you to submit the URL of your PAD file (you need to upload a copy of the PAD file to your web site of course).
  • This can save a lot of time.

  • If you then update your software and the PAD file (you must keep the latest PAD file at the same fixed URL location at all times), many directories will pick-up the changes automatically, and update the details in their directory.

  • Some directories, whenever you release a new version of your software, will announce your new release on their news page, giving you a little burst of traffic.
Finally, there is a repository of PAD files at the Association of Shareware Professionals, which you can submit to. Some directories apparently extract information from this repository, so submitting here can get your software listed even at directories that you've never heard of.
